Window Well Installation

A window well holds back soil, lets in light and stops water pouring into basement windows. We install, replace and drain them.

Where a basement window sits below ground, a window well holds back the soil and gives the window room. When it is cracked, too shallow or clogged with leaves and soil, water runs straight against the window and the wall. Old wells rust, buckle and fill up, and leaks at basement windows are a common surprise after a storm.

We replace or add window wells with sturdy corrugated metal or molded units sized to the window, set on a bed of gravel that drains. Where needed, we connect the well to the footing drain so it cannot fill like a bucket, and we add a clear cover to keep out leaves and debris. For basements with bedrooms, we can plan wells of the right size for an escape window, following local requirements.

Correct size and depth

The well is sized to the window and set to the right depth so water has no path to sneak behind it.

Drainage at the bottom

A gravel base, and where possible a connection to the footing drain, keeps the well from filling with water.

Covers

Clear covers keep out leaves, snow and animals and let light in, without trapping water.

Escape windows

Bedrooms below ground need an opening that works in an emergency. We plan wells to suit, following local code.

Questions

Window Well Installation FAQ

Why does my window leak?

A shallow, cracked or clogged well lets water press against the window and wall.

Do window wells need drains?

It helps a lot. A gravel base or footing connection keeps them from filling.

Can I add a cover?

Yes. Clear covers keep out debris and still let light in.

What about egress windows?

Bedrooms need an emergency exit. We can plan a larger well that meets local rules.

How long does installation take?

Most wells are done in a day each.
