Foundation Crack Checker

Pick the crack type, measure its width and tell us if it is changing to see how much attention it may need.

These tools give planning-level estimates from typical values. They are not quotes, designs or engineering, and results depend on your actual foundation, soil, drainage, site conditions and local rules. Only a site visit can confirm what a project needs, and we give you a written scope and price before any work begins.

How it works

Four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Pick the crack type

Hairline, vertical, diagonal, horizontal, stair-step or a crack in a slab.

  2. 02

    Enter the width

Use a crack gauge card, a ruler or a coin for comparison.

  3. 03

Say where it is and whether it changes

Wall type, whether it leaks and whether it has grown.

  4. 04

    Read the result

How much attention it may need and the suggested next step.

Tips

  • Mark the ends of a crack with a pencil and a date, then measure it again in a few weeks.
  • Hairline vertical cracks are often shrinkage, while horizontal and wide diagonal cracks deserve a closer look.
  • Take photos with a ruler or coin in the frame so changes are easy to see.
Questions

About this tool.

Is this a diagnosis?

No. It is a general guide from common patterns. Only an inspection can confirm the cause.

Why does direction matter?

Vertical, diagonal, horizontal and stair-step cracks point to different forces, such as shrinkage, settlement or soil pressure.

What if my crack leaks?

Water makes a crack more urgent to seal and a sign that drainage needs a look.
