Doors that stick, cracks over windows and floors that slope are the signals foundations send. Learn what they mean.
Foundations rarely announce problems loudly. They whisper: a door that used to close easily starts to rub, a crack appears over a window, a gap opens between a wall and the ceiling, a floor starts to feel different underfoot. Each sign has many possible causes, and not all are serious. A house also moves with the seasons, so a door can stick in humid weather and ease in winter.
The way to tell is to watch and measure. We look at whether cracks are wide or hairline, vertical or diagonal, clean or ragged and whether they grow. We check door gaps, floor levels and whether several signs line up in one corner. The pattern points to the cause. When signs are minor, we suggest what to monitor. When they are strong, we explain what we recommend and why.
